Late Pope John Paul II's private secretary has revealed the former pontiff was wounded by a knife-wielding priest in a shocking new documentary.

In a film based on Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz's memoirs, the late Pope's right-hand man speaks out about the 1982 incident, which John Paul insisted remain a secret.

The current Cardinal of Krakow in Poland will premiere the film, Testimony, for John Paul's successor, Pope Benedict, at the Vatican in Rome, Italy on Thursday.

In the documentary, narrated by actor Michael York, Cardinal Dziwisz reveals Spanish priest Juan Fernandez Krohn attempted to kill the Pope during a trip to Portugal the day after the first anniversary of gunman Mehmet Ali Agca's assassination attempt.

The cardinal says, "I can now reveal that the Holy Father was wounded... There was blood."

Krohn was reportedly arrested and served several years in a Portuguese prison. He was then expelled from the country.
