Underworld: Rise of the Lycans Not So Beckinsale-less

8 January 2009 1:17 AM, PST

Just when we though the only leather-clad ass we'd be staring at in Underworld: Rise of the Lycans would be Rhona Mitra's, we are now told that Kate Beckinsale's Selene will be making an appearance or two.

8 January 2009 12:44 AM, PST

We've been following Mutant Chronicles for a long time. The cast sounded great, the early posters looked incredibly cool and then the trailer looked somewhat campy. Not exactly a bad thing -- maybe this could even become a cult sci-fi hit. Magnet Releasing is showing faith, as the company has acquired the Us distribution rights to the film and already has a theatrical release set.

Rourke and Rockwell for Iron Man Sequel!

7 January 2009 4:36 PM, PST

Two huge casting updates coming your way for the upcoming Iron Man sequel. First up is Mickey Rourke, who continues to land roles left and right. Rourke will play the film's villain, though which villain might still be under debate. Sam Rockwell has been picked up to play not exactly a villain, but a competitor to Tony Stark.

Rourke and Rockwell for Iron Man Sequel

According to THR, Mickey Rourke has been picked up to play a tattooed Russian heavy named Ivan who becomes Whiplash, a man with deadly, technologically enhanced coils. I've never heard of the character, but here's a brief description of him as provided by Marvel:

Mark Scarlotti was a brilliant engineer and weapons designer that had expert fighting skills with a whip and nunchakus. He was also a moderate hand-to-hand combatant.

Judge to Decide Release and Distribution for Watchmen

7 January 2009 1:30 PM, PST

Now here's an interesting move. Though U.S. District Judge Gary A. Feess has been favoring 20th Century Fox since the beginning, Warner Bros. has decided to leave the fate of Watchmen in his hands. Considering that the other option was likely to be a prolonged jury case, this at least means we still have a chance of seeing the film come March 6th.

Judge to Decide Watchmen Fate

It all comes down to January 20th, when 20th Century Fox, Warner Bros. and Judge Feess will meet to discuss if Fox could block/delay Watchmen's theatrical release; something the studio has been going for this whole time.

WGA Likes The Dark Knight for Adapted Screenplay

7 January 2009 1:15 PM, PST

The Writers Guild of America, which obviously focuses on screenplays, have announced their selections for best screenplays of the year. Picking up steam, The Dark Knight has received another positive nod.

WGA Best Screenplay Nominees

For Original Screenplay, the WGA selected Burn After Reading, Milk, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, The Visitor and The Wrestler. I'm going to make an early prediction that either The Wrestler or Milk wins it.

For the Adapted Screenplay bracket, I believe the competition is a bit more fierce. Here you'll find The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, Slumdog Millionaire, The Dark Knight and Doubt.

Just when I thought Garrett Hedlund was going to explode in popularity thanks to the Inheritance franchise -- which kicked off with Eragon -- that was sadly not the case. No matter, as it looks like the actor has been given a second shot.

As Promised: New Watchmen Featurette!

6 January 2009 7:31 PM, PST

I was wondering when we'd get around to these guys. We've seen them in the trailers and in their very own photo (above), and now the latest featurette for Watchmen takes a look at all the Minutemen.

Watchmen Featurette Looks at the Minutemen

For those of you already planning your 2009 Halloween costumes, there are quite a few options to be seen here. Since the Minutemen came before the Watchmen, their costumes are obviously a little more low-budget, but still somehow geeky-cool.

The featurette introduces us to all the Minutemen, most of which who don't exist in the latter parts of the story. I think one might even die right at the beginning...

Japanese Watchmen Trailer Shows New Footage!

6 January 2009 1:41 PM, PST

Just when I was about to begin bitching and moaning about a slow news day we've been alerted to a new -- cough* Japanese *cough -- Watchmen trailer that provides a nice selection of new footage.

Japanese Watchmen Trailer

One aspect of the Watchmen graphic novel that has been given too much detail in the past trailers is the whole global conflict aspect. Yes, we see bits and pieces of Vietnam and a tank getting blown to bits, but what about the present-day story? Okay okay, the film isn't exactly present day -- note Nixon -- but it doesn't touch on anything such as the Cold War. This Japanese trailer for Watchmen does take us around the globe a bit more -- notice shots of Mother Russia -- and does give the character Nixon some more attention.

6 January 2009 12:52 AM, PST

Quick update coming your way for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. As shown in the recent issue of Entertainment Weekly, Warner Bros has sent over a new movie still featuring two unlikely characters very close to snogging one another.

Movie Still: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Yes - Having read the books (repeatedly), I do know that seeing Ginny Weasley and Harry Potter this close shouldn't come as a surprise. Do they end up snogging? If you don't know the answer to this question you might as well smack yourself. You need to read these books! I know, I sound like a super-geek pushing a franchise such as this, but the books are really that good.
