Taylor Lautner returns for New Moon
7 January 2009 7:07 PM, PST
According to The Hollywood Reporter, young actor Taylor Lautner (pictured) has been signed to reprise his role of werewolf Jacob Black in New Moon. Summit Entertainment is fast-tracking the sequel to its vampire hit Twilight for release next November.
The Jacob casting issue had been a hot one for on-line fans of Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight book franchise, some of whom believed Lautner to be too slightly built to play Jacob in New Moon; in the novel, the lycanthropic character bulks up and enters into a romantic relationship with teen heroine Bella. “The characters in Stephenie’s books go through extraordinary changes of circumstance and also appearance,” director Chris Weitz wrote on Meyer’s website, “so it is not surprising that there has been speculation about whether the same actor would portray a character who changes in so many surprising ways throughout the series. But it was my first instinct that Taylor was,

Bella Morte: Beautiful Death (Musick Review)
7 January 2009 6:50 PM, PST
Bella Morte has become a solid fixture in the Gothic rock genre as one of the new touring and writing monsters of our subculture, creating solid, hard-hitting sounds that are unapologetic, at times brash and at others deeply inspirational. Their unique mix of Electronic, Goth, Deathrock, Punk and Metal make for a bittersweet and heavy blend of tracks that entrances people from multiple genres. Always attempting to adapt their style and never be stagnant, the act recently released Beautiful Death, an intriguing and deep new album that hearkens back to their more romantic and traditional Gothic rock roots.
Beautiful Death opens with the bands latest single for Metropolis records, "Find Forever Gone". Andy shows a softer and deeper side to his lyrical repertoire in this very slow and beautiful gothic dance track. "Can't Let This Die" opens with a slow electronic melody and then pulls you in for the killing riff,

His Name Was Jason (DVD Review)
7 January 2009 12:28 PM, PST
Sometimes you wanna go where you know everybody’s name. For diehard fans, that’s the fun of revisiting Friday The 13th. Even if you’ve heard or read some of the stories contained in His Name Was Jason at conventions, in books like Peter Bracke’s Crystal Lake Memories and the documentaries, etc. included on the 2004 Friday DVD box, there’s still a weird lust for some of us to search for undiscovered livers and gizzards in the franchise’s body.
On the other corkscrewed hand, those who haven’t had the chance to check out the books and documentaries are in for a serious treat with His Name, out February 3 in a double-dvd set from Anchor Bay (Pre-Order Here). Director Dan Farrands (screenwriter of The Girl Next Door and Halloween: The Curse Of Michael Myers) and writer/producers Anthony Masi (who explored another archetypal slasher with Halloween: 25 Years Of Terror

Perkins’ 14 Horrorfest NYC autograph signing
7 January 2009 12:17 PM, PST
One of the most intriguing entries the third annual After Dark Horrorfest, running January 9-15 at theaters nationwide, looks to be Perkins’ 14. The nature of its inception—it was born out of an on-line competition in which horror fans submitted their own pitches, voted for cast members and even designed the poster—has made the film eagerly anticipated by the fear community.
Those who attend the 6 p.m. screening this Sunday, January 11 at New York City’s AMC Loews Village 7 (66 3rd Avenue at 11th Street) will get a chance to meet the cast and one of the creators in person. An autograph signing accompanying this show will feature director Craig Singer (helmer of the first Horrorfest’s Dark Ride) and actors Michale Graves, Mihaela Milhut, Gregory O’Connor, Patrick O’Kane, C.J. Singer and Torri Singer. In addition to this and the other previously scheduled showtimes, Singer let us

Exclusive trailer, photo: ghost movie The Beacon
7 January 2009 10:50 AM, PST
Producer Sally Helppie and writer/director Michael Stokes gave Fango an exclusive trailer and first photo from their new fright feature The Beacon; check ’em both out below. It’s the second feature from Helppie’s Texas-based Sabbatical Pictures, which previously made the Stokes-scripted violent actioner Exit Speed (coming on Peace Arch DVD March 3).
The Beacon stars Teri Polo (also soon to be seen in Joe Dante’s The Hole) and David Rees Snell as Bryn and Paul Shaw, who are trying to put their life back together following the death of their child. After they move into the Beacon Apartments, Bryn starts experiencing visions of a little boy who died there, and comes to believe that freeing his spirit will allow her to contact her own dead son through him. “I love mayhem movies like Exit Speed,” Stokes tells Fango, “but The Beacon is intentionally old-school, with a character-driven story,

The Unborn (Film Review)
7 January 2009 7:49 AM, PST
Coming as it does at the end of an awards-film season full of Holocaust dramas, The Unborn’s release seems appropriately timed. Writer/director David S. Goyer’s entry in the possession-film stakes eschews the subgenre’s usual Catholic trappings in favor of a demon with its roots in both Jewish mythology and the WWII persecution of that religion.
Not that it demonstrates a particular sensitivity toward the subject; a line like “It has fallen to you to finish what began at Auschwitz” can’t help but give a viewer pause no matter what the context. And in the end, the Jewish elements are just window dressing on a film stocked with well-worn horror conventions, yet one that behaves like it’s the very first movie to feature a creepy kid, an elder in a nursing home who must be consulted for crucial dark information and a teenaged girl slowly

Black Light Burns: Cover Your Heart/The Anvil Pants Odyssey (Musick Review)
6 January 2009 10:00 PM, PST
On Monday, Fangoria Musick Welcomed new staffer Doctor Raven to the crew. In his first review he took a listen to the new album from Combichrist (see review here). For his second helping, he enters the sonic realm of Combichrist's current tourmates, Black Light Burns.
Wes Borland of Limp Bizkit fame left the former “Rap-Metal” act in 2001 to begin working on solo projects that wouldn’t limit his own personal creative outlets. Having reported to have always been a fan of darker alternative rock music, he set out early on with the act Big Dumb Face. Having toured with Trent Reznor, Marylin Manson and The Crystal Method on various projects, Borland now creates his own brand of dark Industrial under the name Black Light Burns. 2007 saw the release of their first album, entitled Cruel Melody. Cover Your Heart is their 2008 disc, featuring cover interpretations of some of Gothic rock and pop’s signature songs,

6 January 2009 3:26 PM, PST

It’ll then receive limited theatrical release on April 24; as we reported here, the movie will have its broadcast premiere on the Sci Fi Channel later this spring. Dead Of Night’s Simon Hunter directed from a script by Event Horizon’s Philip Eisner, with The Mist’s Thomas Jane (pictured), Hellboy’s Ron Perlman, Devon Aoki and John Malkovich starring. “Mutant Chronicles is a blast,” says Magnolia president Eamonn Bowles. “It’s an action-packed thriller with a dynamite cast and very impressive production values. German goremeisters team up!
6 January 2009 11:45 AM, PST
Fango got word from a source who would know that two of the most notorious German genre directors are about to collaborate. Timo Rose (pictured) and Andreas Schnaas will co-direct a movie with the working title of Unrated, set to lens in their home country in March.
No relation to German filmmaker Frank Montag’s Uncut (which recently filmed in NYC), Unrated is described as “an English-language supernatural flick with ghosts, demons and Timo and Andreas’ requisite gore.” Rose’s credits include Barricade, The Fearmakers and the upcoming Beast, while Schnaas has helmed the likes of the Violent Shit flicks, Demonium, Nikos The Impaler and the new Don’T Wake The Dead. We’ll bring you any Unrated updates we find out!

A book with Bad Taste
6 January 2009 11:41 AM, PST
There have been numerous books published about Peter Jackson’s Lord Of The Rings saga, but Wallflower Press has gone back to Jackson’s roots. The British publisher has issued Bad Taste, a study of the New Zealand filmmaker’s splattery debut feature.
Written by Jim Barratt (ironically, a former member of the gore-averse British Board of Film Classification!), the 144-page paperback is an in-depth look at Bad Taste’s grassroots production and how it became a hit at the Cannes Film Festival and then with fans worldwide, launching both Jackson’s career and a new wave of “splatstick” movies. The book can be ordered from Wallflower’s site here or at other on-line stores.

Sonic Unleashed (Video Game Review)
6 January 2009 11:32 AM, PST
Classic video-game characters never die, it seems; they just go to the dark side. Sonic, our favorite speedy blue hedgehog, has embraced his werehog side in the latest of the long-running series.
Sonic Unleashed (available for PlayStation 2 and 3, Xbox 360 and Wii, reviewed here on PS3) begins with a spectacular CG movie of Sonic in outer space battling the evil Dr. Robotnik, I mean Eggman, for control of the fabled Chaos Emeralds. Eggman manages to trap and strip Sonic of his super powers, and he watches helplessly as Eggman uses the Emeralds to fire a beam of energy at an Earthlike planet, breaking apart the seven continents and releasing the Dark Gaia, which he plans to use to control the world.
Sonic finds that he has been exposed to pure Chaos Emerald energy, and as a side effect it has awakened his inner werehog. Eggman sends the spent Emeralds, and Sonic,

Combichrist: Today We Are All Demons (Musick Review)
5 January 2009 10:56 PM, PST
Andy Laplegua brings us another gem of brutal and punishing synth beats in the new Combichrist release Today We Are All Demons. After the highly successful release of the single “Get Your Body Beat” and their 2007 double-disc set What The F*** Is Wrong With You People?, Combichrist cements themselves as one of the new masters of Industrial rock with their latest release. The aggro-tech act begins 2009 with a whirlwind tour promoting the new album, along with taking on former Imperative Reaction drummer Trevor Friedrich.
Today We Are All Demons opens with the track “No Afterparty”, a recorded series of sound bytes of what I’m sure was a promoter's worst day getting arrested. If you can’t laugh at the situation, you’re taking yourself too seriously. “All Pain is Gone” kicks the teeth in on what promises to be a truly pulse-pounding industrial album. Andy’s passion for his
