THE BUZZ: Don't call this one an awards-season has-been just because its December wide release date was nixed by a cost-cutting Paramount; Edward Zwick's WWII drama is still buzzing (though the volume has been turned down) and has received an Oscar-qualifying run before its post-holiday push into the mainstream. However, the chance that Daniel Craig might be the first 007 to score an Oscar nod before his License to Kill has been revoked is looking increasingly faint. Still, his toughest competition may be co-stars Bell and Schreiber. As for the film itself, while a Best Picture nomination is unlikely, more importantly, it's bringing to light a significant and often overlooked historical event. Director: Gary Winick Stars: Kate Hudson, Anne Hathaway, Candice Bergen (Full Cast) Studio: Fox 2000 Pictures The Plot: Two best friends (Hudson and Hathaway) become rivals when a clerical error results in their respective weddings being held at the same place ... on the same day.
THE BUZZ: Though BW is set in Boston, most of the drama is centered around Hathaway and Hudson's bridal blitz on NYC, a city that has treated Ms. Hathaway very well (Hudson, though, not so much). With this sure-fire hit and her singing-and-dancing performance in Rob Marshall's Nine, it's apparent that Hudson has her career back on track, while Hathaway can expect a busy winter promoting this movie, and perhaps enjoying an Oscar nomination for Rachel Getting Married; however, look for Candice Bergen's wedding planner to make like Miranda Priestly and truly run the events. Director: David S. Goyer Stars: Odette Yustman, Gary Oldman, Cam Gigandet (Full Cast) Studio: Rogue Pictures The Plot: Haunted by strange dreams and recurring ghostly visions, Casey Beldon (Yustman) turns to a spiritual advisor (Oldman) for help. Together, they learn that Casey had a twin brother who never made it to term, and that her intended sibling is tied to a curse that requires Casey's death in order to manifest itself in our world.
THE BUZZ: After you watch The Unborn's trailer, perhaps you can ask yourself the following question: Is David Goyer a better screenwriter (The Dark Knight, Dark City) than director (The Invisible, Blade: Trinity)? I don't mean any aggressive disrespect, but I fail to see one shred of ingenuity in this preview, though I say the sight of a possessed Idris Elba makes him a good pick for a potential Nick Fury, should that role, uh, come to term. All that said, I must remember there's a generation or two behind me that's probably never seen The Exorcist, so here's hoping Goyer pushes beyond the usual genre devices and helps Cloverfield's Odette Yustman get her Linda Blair on. THE BUZZ: Jensen Ackles is finding the transition away from small screen rife with lead roles in ill-advised horror remakes -- just like his "Supernatural" co-star, Jared Padalecki, who will be seen in the upcoming Friday the 13th. Sigh. I just don't get it ... This project has enough scrappy talent to generate convincing scares, but why can't they be trusted with an original screenplay? THE BUZZ: Apologies to George Tillman Jr., but unless John Singleton, Albert and Allen Hughes, or another filmmaker of their caliber had signed on to develop and direct this biography, what sort of service are you paying to Biggie's legacy? Derek Luke as Puffy, Angela Bassett as Ms. Wallace, and Anthony Mackie as arch-nemesis Tupac are nice flourishes, I just wish the production hired more behind-the-camera talent, and at least considered a December release for an awards-qualifying run (they must already know the kind of film they have on their hands). Still, with all the posthumous praise, movies, Greatest Hits CDs and dorm room posters his West Coast rival rapper Tupac received, it's about time Biggie got his big screen due. That strong supporting cast helps take the weight (put not intended) off newcomer Woolard, but judging by the first teaser trailer he looks like he owns this role. THE BUZZ: Every other week or so, a Bollywood film is released in the U.S. and typically these movies flirt with breakout success. As Hollywood increasingly looks for film funding abroad, it was bound to happen that a studio would target a Bollywood film for likely crossover success, and that's what Warner Bros. has done in this case. The Stephen Chow set should love this lookalike (and I mean that in a sweet, nurturing way), as should the more hardcore kung-fu heads who appreciate the work of actor Gordon Liu. THE BUZZ: Visual effects whiz Thor Freudenthal was set to make his directorial debut on They Came from Upstairs, but he hopped on Dogs, a project I'm hearing will have some dark shading and a PG rating. Cute kids here, an even cuter adult cast (Kudrow plays the allergic aunt) ... could Emma Roberts, whose Wild Child disappeared from the 2008/2009 calendar, have her first actual-real box-office hit? Pictures The Plot: A little girl (Bennett) rallies her friends -- both real and imaginary -- to rescue her father (Fraser), a bookbinder who can bring characters to life by reading aloud, from the clutches of an evil-doer (Serkis).
THE BUZZ: My thanks to the people who submitted this title to us wayyyy back when it appeared to be nothing more than an unsubstantiated rumor; two-plus years ago, who knew Brendan Fraser was mounting a comeback for 2008? Before The Mummy 3 was announced, Fraser and director Iain Softley (K-PAX, The Skeleton Key) were attached to this adaptation of Cornelia Funke's best-seller, which could be a hit on par with Bridge to Terabithia or The Spiderwick Chronicles. But I say don't hold your breath for Inkspell or Inkdeath just yet; this is one of the last big-budget projects New Line greenlighted before they were restructured, so I think Fraser and co. win over audiences worldwide in order for any sequels to arise. Director: Patrick Tatopoulos Stars: Rhona Mitra, Michael Sheen, Bill Nighy (Full Cast) Studio: Screen Gems The Plot: A look at how the werewolf named Lucian (Sheen) led an uprising against an aristocratic vampire sect -- a revolt that will mark the beginning of a centuries-old war between the two races. THE BUZZ: Exactly how Rhona Mitra's name has become synonymous with ill-advised horror projects is something for her and her agents to figure out, but it's not like she doesn't make sense in this role -- it's the movie's existence itself that has us, and many, many others, asking questions. And not to kick a once-powerful franchise when it's down, but the footage showed at Comic-Con back in July didn't necessarily rally the masses to this cause, though in this age of direct-to-DVD sequels, something tells me this isn't the last we've heard of the war between Lycans and Death Dealers. Director: Charles Guard Thomas Guard Stars: Emily Browning, Arielle Kebbel, Elizabeth Banks (Full Cast) Studio: DreamWorks SKG The Plot: After her mother's death and her subsequent hospital stay, Anna Rydell (Browning) returns home to be with her sister (Krebbel) and her father (Strathairn), who has become engaged to Rachel (Banks), her mother's former nurse. During her first night back, Anna is visited by her mother's ghost, who reveals that the new woman in her father's life is not who she pretends to be, leading to a fateful confrontation between the women of the house. THE BUZZ: Some of The Ring's business minds present this horror-thriller, and you can see their money-making formula lurking in the trailer: the Pacific Northwest setting, the weirdly limber, ink-haired ghosts, a scattering of creepy ghosts kids ... and, oh yeah, Ring 2 co-star Arielle Krebbel. The obvious strengths here will be found in the performances of this ace cast, as well as the presence of "Lost" story editor Craig Rosenberg; we'll see if relatively green co-directors Charles and Thomas Guard can bring anything new to the big screen (or if they'll become the new Pang brothers?). Director: Pierre Morel Stars: Liam Neeson, Maggie Grace, Famke Janssen (Full Cast) Studio: Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation The Plot: A former spy (Neeson) relies on his old skills to save his daughter (Grace), who was kidnapped by slave traders during her vacation in Paris. THE BUZZ: Director Pierre Morel's follow up to the nouveau classique District B13 is looking stressful! And yet how awesome will it be to watch Liam Neeson throw a punch in pursuit of the baddies who made off with Maggie Grace? You have to leave it to Luc Besson and his Transporter cronies (Morel was the cinematographer for the first two Frank Martin chapters and co-screenwriter Robert Mark Kamen has had a hand in all three movies) for making a real-life scenario so freaky/engaging, though I'm hoping I won't be spoiled as to the story's twists and resolution before it comes out Stateside since the movie has been out in Asia and Europe for months. Though I will say Ms. Grace, who looks a bit like Jennifer Connelly here, does not do a full reveal for her legion of followers. Director: Jonas Elmer Stars: Renée Zellweger, Harry Connick Jr., Nathan Fillion (Full Cast) Studio: Gold Circle Films The Plot: A Miami-based consultant (Zellweger) is shipped out to small-town Minnesota for her newest project: supervising the restructuring of a local manufacturing plant. After a frosty reception, she warms to the townspeople (and vice versa), though a tough business mandate causes her to reconsider her personal and professional objectives. THE BUZZ: One of the first Neo-Great Depression projects coming out of Hollywood, Chilled is operating on absolutely zero buzz as we're being swept into awards season. It could be the beginning of another disappointing year for the Zell; the type of bummer that even a Fillion/Connick Jr. sandwich couldn't remedy.
