"Because the story has already been told in Alive: The Story of the Andes Survivors, the 1974 best seller by Piers Paul Read, and retold in its 1993 screen adaptation starring Ethan Hawke, why again?" asks Stephen Holden in the New York Times. "The short answer is that in [Stranded: I've Come From a Plane That Crashed on the Mountains], all 16 of the survivors, now middle-aged, tell the story in their own words." And Salon's Andrew O'Hehir finds the resulting film "intimate, terrifying and positively riveting... One way of explaining Stranded is that [director Gonzalo] Arijon's after not just the objective facts of what happened and when, which are dramatic enough, but also the subjective reality, the psychological and physiological desolation of the experience."
David D'Arcy talks with Arijon about why he's retelling a well-known tale.

Getting a chance to interview Kevin Smith is one of those moments where you know you aren't going to have enough time, that is if you know the man at all and have ever heard him speak. Hell, if you have ever seen "An Evening with Kevin Smith" you already know what I am talking about, he told a story about Prince that lasted over 40 minutes and each and every minute of it was entertaining. Considering the fact that I had 30 minutes with the man, when one-on-one interviews are traditionally only limited to 15 minutes or so, you would think I would be ecstatic, but we only got to about 50% of my questions since we went off on so many tangents. It wasn't until six minutes in that we even got on topic, which is Zack and Miri Make a Porno, opening this Friday, October 31. I had seen Max Payne that

Don't be ashamed if your eyes get moist during the finale of "Stranded." Tears are a natural reaction to this uplifting documentary recounting a miracle in the snow.
In 1972, a plane carrying young members of an Uruguayan rugby team and a few relatives crashed into the mighty, snow-covered Andes while en route to Chile.
Nearly half of the 45 aboard survived in the wreckage, but eight of them later died in an avalanche and one succumbed to his injuries.
Amazingly, 16 passengers were alive 72 days after the plane went down in difficult and remote terrain. "They smelled of the grave," says one of the shepherds who greeted them.

Don Cheadle is stepping in to replace Terrence Howard in “Iron Man 2,” Marvel Studios’ sequel to its summer blockbuster, says The Hollywood Reporter. In the movie, Howard played Jim Rhodes, Tony Stark’s best friend and future armor-clad hero War Machine. One scene featured Howard looking at a silver suit of armor and saying “Next time,” a line that caused great delight for fans. But there will be no next time for Howard. Marvel had no comment, but sources close to the deal said negotiations with Howard fell through over financial differences, among other reasons. Marvel, which had wanted to work with Cheadle, then decided to take the role in another direction and approached the actor, who is shooting Antoine Fuqua’s “Brooklyn’s Finest” with Richard Gere and Ethan Hawke. Rhodes is expected to play a larger part in the sequel, which is rumored to go beyond high-tech villains.

Been wondering about the status of the Spierig Brothers' forever-in-the making vampire film Daybreakers? Even remember anything about it at this point? I can’t say I’d blame you if you answer “no” to the first because of a “yes” to the second.
Well, Moviehole chatted up Daybreakers star Vince Colosimo yesterday to learn about his role in the upcoming DiCaprio/Crowe flick Body of Lies, and the thesp had some troubling, but unsurprising, news about Daybreakers. “It was meant to be released at the end of October ... November ... but I think it’s been delayed and probably won’t be released till next year now,” he told the site. But hey, at least it sounds like it could be worth the wait; ”It’s a great vampire flick,” he continued. ”I’ve seen a lot of it – bits and pieces cut together – and it’s great.”
For those still hazy,

Everyone knows the age old saying that what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger. In this film, that's the unquestionable truth for South Boston thug Brian (Mark Ruffalo) and his friend Paulie (Ethan Hawke), who grew up stealing and bullying fellow locals for cash. Now he's got a wife and two kids and is still making his money in dishonest ways. What Doesn't Kill You unfortunately isn't the next Departed or Gone Baby Gone, but it's another fine film in the on-going South Boston chronicles. First-time writer/director Brian Goodman pulls together quite a few great elements in the film, from the acting to the score, but it's in dire need of a script rewrite and editing overhaul before it can be called a true gem. What Doesn't Kill You is the story of two South Boston thugs told from the other side for once. Brian's partner in crime

It was another day of red carpets at the Toronto Film Festival, and this time there were a few new stars to add to the mix. Rachel McAdams was a welcome — but sadly date-free — fresh face at the premiere of Che, as was Emmanuelle Chriqui in her cute Lbd. Mark Ruffalo and Adrien Brody goofed around while Rachel Weisz looked gorgeous in her bandage dress as the trio kept on promoting The Brothers Bloom. Paris and Benji were happy to pose together there as expected to check out a screening of Paris, Not France, the documentary which features both members of the happy couple. A representative for Uma Thurman has denied reports that the actress is pregnant. Responding to latest claim that she presumably is pregnant after reportedly ordering maternity dresses from Fred Segal in Santa Monica, the representative insisted the movie beauty "is absolutely not pregnant."
The New York Daily News claimed in a post dated September 8 that last week "Uma's assistant called Fred Segal in Santa Monica and ordered a half dozen dresses from Tricky Threads." All the outfits, according to the newspaper's spy, were "two sizes larger than she usually orders".
Much contrary to the claim, the representative stated the star didn't "order any clothes from Fred Segal" adding that "We are trying to find out if someone used her name to order clothes that were not meant for her."
The latest pregnancy rumor wasn't the first for Uma. Back in July she was forced to deny speculation that she was

Latest: Uma Thurman has been forced to deny she is expecting her first child with fiance Arki Busson following reports she purchased a bundle of over-sized dresses to prepare for pregnancy.
According to New York Daily News reports on Monday, the actress' assistant called luxury retailer Fred Segal last week (beg01Sep08), ordering six dresses two sizes too large for the star.
But a representative for Thurman insists the reports are false, telling Usmagazine.com: "She is absolutely not pregnant. She also did not order any clothes from Fred Segal. We are trying to find out if someone used her name to order clothes that were not meant for her."
Thurman was forced to deny she was pregnant in July, just after announcing her engagement to Busson, when pictures of the 38-year-old in a bikini on vacation sparked reports she was expecting.
The Kill Bill star has two children, Maya, 10, and Levon, six, with ex-husband Ethan Hawke.

Pregnancy rumors hit Uma Thurman yet again after she is said to have ordered maternity dresses from a boutique. The New York Daily News reported that last week "Uma's assistant called Fred Segal in Santa Monica and ordered a half dozen dresses from Tricky Threads." All the outfits, according to the newspaper's spy, are "two sizes larger than she usually orders".
This isn't the first time that Uma has been reported pregnant. In July she denied such rumors which were quick to spread like a wildfire after she was photographed showing off a growing belly during a vacation on the island of Corsica with her financier fiance Arpad 'Arki' Busson.
She, however, doesn't rule out having more children in addition to son Levon Roan and daughter Maya Ray, whom she has with then husband Ethan Hawke. "If it's meant to happen, it will. I love and adore being a mother,

Uma Thurman has fuelled speculation she is expecting her first child with fiance Arki Busson after reportedly purchasing a bundle of dresses in larger sizes to prepare for her expanding stomach.
Thurman hinted last month she would like to add to her family and have children with the Swiss businessman.
According to the New York Daily News, the actress' assistant called luxury retailer Fred Segal last week (beg01Sep08), ordering six over-sized dresses for the star.
A source tells the newspaper, "They were all two sizes larger than she usually orders."

Anthology films usually attract more people to be in their casts than in their audiences. For some reason, whether it's the lack of one linear storyline or whatever, movies like Four Rooms and Coffee and Cigarettes routinely star some of the world's best talent and recruit some of its best directors (although Coffee and Cigarettes was directly entirely by Jim Jarmusch).
Paris Je t'aime was released in 2006 as a love song to Paris, and included segments directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, Tom Tykwer, Walter Salles, Gus Van Sant, and Wes Craven, among many others. That film inspired the follow-up New York, I Love You, which you can't really call a sequel, but it's not a continuation of the storyline. It's kind of an American reimagining, if I can use my least favorite movie term.
I kind of wish this film featured the work of the Paris directors, frankly, although

Embedded above is the trailer for New York, I Love You, an anthology of shorts from the producers of the similar Paris, Je T'aime, and going off this taste alone, I'd be willing to say that this might turn out to be just as winsome as that film was.
Several directors -- among them: Mira Nair, Scarlett Johansson, Natalie Portman, and, um, Brett Ratner -- and even more actors -- including Bradley Cooper, Chris Cooper, Julie Christie, John Hurt, Ethan Hawke, Orlando Bloom, Shia Labeouf, Kevin Bacon, Maggie Q, and again, Portman -- come together with tales of love and life in the various neighborhoods of NYC.
The film is scheduled to make its world premiere at the fast approaching Toronto International Film Festival next month, and if IMDb is to be believed, it'll open in the States next

For a total of 312 films from 64 different countries. Wow, I wish I could go. Of the remaining announcements in 3 different sections, the most intriguing would have to be Vincent Cassel playing legendary French gangster Jacques Mesrine in Public Enemy No. 1. It's listed as a "work-in-progress" so I guess that means what will be screened is not the final cut. Another I'm looking forward to is The Lucky Ones which stars one of my favorites, Tim Robbins. It's about some returning soldiers who go on a road trip across America. Check out the full list following.
