While X-Men and X-Men: United showed us that it was possible to make a film with multiple superheroes, X-Men: The Last Stand reminded us that it was extremely difficult to do. Marvel has had so much success with their single-hero films that they must be getting anxious with the production of The Avengers approaching.
With so many characters, the odds of watching the film drown in its own glory can become very likely.
Robert Downey Jr. Talks Avengers
If Marvel isn't worried, Robert Downey Jr. sure is. While talking with MTV, the actor admitted that the movie could be great or just suck big time.

Gavin Hood's upcoming "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" is just one of many future "X-Men" films 20th Century Fox is currently developing.
According to Variety, the studio is also planning "X-Men: First Class," a potential new series of flicks with a focus on a bunch of younger mutants.
Any other details are kept under wraps for now, but the trade says the film and its possible sequels may follow some of the younger characters introduced in the previous films.
Josh Schwartz, creator of television's "The O.C.," "Gossip Girl" and "Chuck," is on board to write the script for "First Class." I guess that could mean we'll see a lot of teenage drama in the film, right?
Anyway, the last "X-Men" installment was Brett Ratner's "X-Men: The Last Stand," which grossed $234.3 million in 2006. "Wolverine" is due in theaters May 1, 2009, while Fox is also working on a spinoff based on the character Magneto.

Unfortunately, Fox is not making an X-Babies movie. Yet. Instead, the studio is continuing the franchise with X-Men: First Class, a kind of New Mutants or Generation X-like spinoff that will probably capitalize on the risen stardom of Ellen Page, who played Shadowcat in X-Men: The Last Stand, rather than a reboot/origin story a la the First Class comic book. And with Josh Schwartz writing the screenplay, it should be like The O.C. and Gossip Girl, only with mutant superheroes. In other Marvel adaptation news, First Avenger: Captain America will be scripted by Chronicles of Narnia duo Christoph ...

It has just been announced that Twentieth Century Fox is gearing up to continue its “X-Men” franchise. Awesome, you say? Not so fast. Variety has the word that Twentieth Century Fox is gearing up to continue its “X-Men" franchise....with a younger set of mutants. Studio has tapped “Gossip Girl” creator Josh Schwartz to write “X-Men: First Class.” Schwartz, the creator and executive producer of CW’s teen hit as well as Fox’s youth-centric “The Oc” and NBC’s “Chuck," is expected to inject a next-gen sensibility into the superhero series, which has earned $1.2 billion worldwide. The writing assignment has also included the possibility of directing the film, but so far Schwartz has opted not to take the helm. Lauren Shuler Donner, who produced all three “X-Men" pics, as well as next summer’s “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” is producing “First Class” alongside “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” scribe Simon Kinberg.

Top 10 Reasons Not to Make Batman 3 Brad has officially added Batman 3 to the RopeofSilicon database, but that doesn't mean it's going to get made, it just means hopes are getting high. Everyone and their mom wants Batman 3. Without a doubt I want it. Sooner the better. And ,of course, since The Dark Knight made a zillion dollars, there will be a third one within the next few years. No question on that happening. However, just because we demand another sequel doesn't necessarily mean it's the smart move to make one. So here's just a few things - some serious, some not so - that should cause you to pause before whining about the wait for Batman 3. Expect More Annoying Viral Sites They keep the fans interested, but they really are annoying.

In August, Screen Rant reported that David Goyer would be writing and directing the upcoming Magneto spinoff film. The movie reportedly would take place before the X-Men trilogy and would center around the origins of none other than our favorite magnetism magician.
Last week, The Geek Files department of the Coventry Telegraph received the official plot synopsis and here are some key parts:
“The original X-Men film began with a prologue that showed the character as a child being led to a concentration camp by Nazis and that is the period in which the Magneto film will take place. This setup will allow a future villain to at least flirt with the designation of protagonist since the character will be seen almost exclusively in his formative years.”
It sounds as if Magneto grows up to combat the Nazis and this story would definitely explain how he has come to hate

Brett Ratner has unsheathed his cinematic broadsword to impale the tender teat of the much beloved barbarian, Conan.
Ain't It Cool News reports that "it appears to be official that Brett Ratner is directing [Conan]." According to the Web site, the film's scribe Howard McCain (Outlander) "had some big plans for how to structure the film," drawing inspirations from the original Robert Howard stories rather than the John Milius directed Conan the Barbarian.
"I could tell the material was in the right hands," says AICN's Moriarty of McCain after the two met earlier this year. But with the news of Ratner's involvement, Moriarty describes his excitement level as falling "through the floor."
"Oh, Brett... why do you want to hurt me? Why do you want to make this movie?" writes Moriarty. "Please, please, please tell me it’s because you have a genuine passion for the material and not just because

Taylor Kitsch is breaking out from under the Friday Night Lights to play on the big screen in next May's X-Men Origins: Wolverine from 20th Century Fox. Kitsch plays Remy LeBeau, commonly known as the smooth-talking mutant called Gambit. The actor spoke with Media Blvd about his role in the film.
"He's just another comic book character that has kinetic energy," Kitsch describes of Gambit. "It's a fun role. You'll have fun watching it."
Kitsch admits that he was largely unfamiliar with the character before working on Wolverine, but has since gained a fondness for the heart-breaking antihero.
"I love the character, I love the powers, and I love what they did with him," Kitsch says. "I didn't know that much [about the role], but in my experience, it was a blessing to go in and create my take on him."
At the moment, Kitsch is best known as Tim Riggins on NBC's Friday Night Lights.

In an interview with IESB, 20th Century Fox co-chairman Tom Rothman spoke about the possibility of rebooting their Daredevil franchise.
"A Daredevil, to use your words, reboot, is something we are thinking very seriously about," Rothman tells the site, though he adds that "[in] the movie business, nothing [happens] soon."
Fox still retains all the rights to the Daredevil franchise, Rothman claims, and thinks that audiences will be receptive to a relaunch if made to a high standard. Further, Iron Man cemented the fact that a second tier hero done well can make a lot of money.
Asked if a new Daredevil would match the dark tone of The Dark Knight, Rothman wasn't sure that such a tone was the key to that film's success.
"[Daredevil] needs a visionary at the level that Chris Nolan [director of The Dark Knight] was," Rothman states. "It needs a director, honestly, who has a genuine vision. What we wouldn't do is

God of War fans have been clamoring for a film adaptation of the hit video game for years now. Honestly, who wouldn't want to see the God-hunting warmonger Kratos ripping off Medusa's head on the big screen? If that's something that might interest you, then get ready, because that movie is on the way.
Ugo has the exclusive that Brett Ratner is set to direct God of War. That's right, the Rush Hour guy. Same dude who drove X-Men: The Last Stand straight into the box office -- or straight into the ground, depending on who you talk to.
Though Ratner did confirm his involvement to Ugo, no official announcement has been made regarding the project. In their exclusive video, Ratner mentions his upcoming projects in stride.
"[I'm working on] a few movies, waiting for scripts and greenlights to come in," Ratner says. "A few good things... Playboy, Beverly Hills Cop, [and] God of War.

If he were around during the 1920s, Brett Ratner would probably have been rolling through your impoverished agrarian town selling snake oil. In the 21st century, he's a big time movie director and his own best (and worst) publicist. While Ratner's films have made a considerable amount of money - in fact, he's one of the more profitable directors of the past decade - his real talent is for selling Brett Ratner.
He's at his best with enormous, stupid action movies like Rush Hour. Nothing against Rush Hour, because the first one is pretty good, but they're all lousy stupid. And there's no harm in that. Where Ratner gets himself in trouble is when he changes things up. The only exception to that was the surprisingly strong and mellow Red Dragon, but that looked a lot like a Silence of the Lambs carbon copy more than its own entity.

Cross off another popular video game for adaptation. God of War has been called on and, as far as we can tell, Brett Ratner will direct.
Brett Ratner to Direct God of War
The good people at Ugo Movie Blog have learned direct from the horse's mouth that Brett Ratner will direct the adaptation of God of War. Considering that his last big-budget hoorah, X-Men: The Last Stand, was the worst in the franchise, I remain skeptical of Ratner doing a big budget adaptation. One nice thing to know is that Ratner likely won't shy away from an R-rating.

Talking about his dream job to direct any "Batman" movies, helmer Brett Ratner suggested
that the first spin-off movie made from the bat-themed superhero series should be about Joker. To MTV News, the man behind "X-Men: The Last Stand" said that exploring Joker's origin as the Red Hood would be "really cool".
Emphasizing on how grand Joker is as a villain, the 39-year-old filmmaker suggested that there are other actors, who can interpret the psycho as great as Jack Nicholson in "Batman" and Heath Ledger in "The Dark Knight", putting Robert Downey Jr. name as one of them. Ratner explained. "...Joker is a great villain. That's why Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger had so much to work with. And I think there will be another actor who can interpret that. It would be great to see [Robert] Downey [Jr.] as the Joker, for instance."

Rumor has it Brett Ratner may be directing the newest version of "Conan". According to Dread Central, production company Nu Image Films have been offering the "X-Men: The Last Stand" helmer a position behind the lens for this reboot project. Nevertheless, there is yet any confirmation over the speculation.
Prior to Ratner's directing rumor, a list of filmmaker names has been put out for the possible helmer position. Those who have been lined up for the role included "Die Hard" helmer John McTiernan, "Hitman" helmer Xavier Gens, "Grindhouse" co-director Robert Rodriguez as well as "Halloween" remake helmer Rob Zombie.
"Conan" has been reported to be fast tracked since the studio producing it brought in Dirk Blackman and Howard McCain to rewrite the script earlier. The action adventure film for Lionsgate Films is produced by Boaz Davidson, George Furla, Joe Gatta, Avi Lerner and Fredrik Malmberg. Slated for 2009 release, it allegedly

Nicole Kidman is attached to produce and star in “The Eighth Wonder,” an action adventure that Simon Kinberg will write for 20th Century Fox, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Specific details about the film are still unknown of course, but the plot focuses on an important archeological discovery that triggers a perilous race around the world. Sounds a bit like “Rat Race” combined with “Indiana Jones.”
The trade also points out that Kidman met Kinberg back when she was still attached to star in “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.” She later dropped out, handing the female lead role to Angelina Jolie.
Besides “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” Kinberg collaborated on the scripts for “X-Men: The Last Stand,” “Jumper” and “Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian.”
Kidman most recently starred in “The Golden Compass,” which I admit I really enjoyed. Next up she can be seen in Baz Luhrmann’s big adventurous drama “Australia.

Rumor has it that "Desperate Housewives" star Eva Longoria may be one of the superheroes in "The Avengers". The speculation has been brought up after a series of her photos clutching a copy of The Avenger comic book when leaving the L.A. offices of Marvel Comics was uncovered. The images posted by Flawed Hollywood was said to be taken on Friday, September 12.
Further on the story, L.A. Times inferred that Longoria may be eyeing the possibility to portray superheroine The Wasp. Wasp, who is initially a self-centered heiress and daughter of wealthy scientist Vernon Van Dyne named Janet, is one of the founding members of the Avengers. Upon her father's death, Janet requested Dr. Henry "Hank" Pym, a.k.a Ant-Man, to give her "Pym particles" which allows her to shrink, grow wings and fire blasts of energy.
Due to be released on July 1, 2011, a few months after

Jeez-Louise, 20th Century Fox, you are not doing so hot these days. First comes word that you had the lowest box office totals for summer 2008; next furious fanboys worldwide want to rip you a new one over your Watchmen lawsuit; and now some acclaimed directors are beginning to speak out about what a soul-crushing, creatively stifling cabal of evil your company truly is.

And now acclaimed director Alex Proyas is throwing up the finger (so to speak) in Fox’s face–and his displeasure is a veritable death sentence for what might have been one of the coolest comic book movie adaptations of all: The Silver Surfer.
