According to Variety, “Get Smart” director Peter Segal and his production partner Michael Ewing have been booked by Warner Bros to a three-year first-look deal at the studio, and one of the aspects of the deal has been the acquisition of the John August-scripted “Captain Marvel”. Segal will be directing the DC Comics adaptation. He and Ewing began working on the film two years ago, but the property has moved over to Warner Bros. Captain Marvel and Warner Bros Say Shazam!

21 November 2008 6:02 AM, PST | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

The Captain Marvel film seems to finally be moving forward again, if this Variety item is anything to go by. Get Smart's Peter Segal has set a first-look deal at Warner Bros., and as part of the deal the studio acquired the John August-scripted Captain Marvel which Segel is still in line to direct.

The film was originally set up at New Line, but we all remember what happened there, so Marvel fans will be relieved to know he's got a new studio to call home -- and one that all his DC friends are at. I'm curious about the title switch ... are they going to retitle it Captain Marvel, and risk everyone being confused as to which comic brand he belongs to?

The last word we had on the project was precisely a year ago, when Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson signed on to play the villainous Black Adam.

Peter Segal Lines Up Projects At Warners

20 November 2008 11:41 PM, PST | From EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news

Although Peter Segal is, by no stretch of the imagination, a great comedic director in the vein of a Billy Wilder or a Harold Ramis, he’s made a habit over the years of delivering high-grossing, crowd-pleasing comedies that have more than their fair share of laughs, from his debut on The Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult, to the underrated My Fellow Americans, to three Adam Sandler movies and this year’s Get Smart. And so we’re pleased to say that the 45 year-old has just lined up three more movies at Warner Bros, with whom he and producing partner Michael Ewing have just signed a three-year first-look deal. The deal doesn’t include Get Smart 2, which Segal will direct at some point next year, depending on the availability of star, Steve Carell. Tom J. Astle and Matt Ember are currently beavering away on the script, which in

Captain Marvel Gets Smart

20 November 2008 11:06 PM, PST | From cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news

Captain Marvel is one of those superheroes who falls squarely into the doesn't need to be made into a movie category. Unfortunately, we've long since run out of the does need to be made into a movie types, so we're left with nothing to say except Shazzam! Variety says Warner Bros. is moving ahead with turning the life of teenager Billy Batson into a big screen adventure, and they've hired Pete Segal to direct it as part of a new first-look deal involving another movie which most people do not care about. For those of you who do, that movie is Liam McBain: International Tennis Star and Proper English Geezer. Pete Segal is the guy behind the camera on such recent movies as Get Smart, The Longest Yard, and 50 First Dates. The guy's resume is a cavalcade of comedies, action-comedies, and Adam Sandler movies. That makes him perfect for this

'The Dark Knight' Leads Nominees For Utterly Worthless People's Choice Awards

12 November 2008 1:55 PM, PST | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

They still haven't shut down The People's Choice Awards, and they'll air next January, hosted again by Queen Latifah. These awards, of course, are very rarely indicative of anything else. Sometimes you'll see some carryover from the Golden Globes to the Oscars, and there are a couple of film critics' groups that are usually good predictors of the Academy Awards, too, but The people's Choice Awards can really only give you pointers in your Blockbuster Movie Awards office pool.

It's the 35th annual celebration, which means prior to 1974, people had no choice. That really is a shame, isn't it?

This might all see like I'm making fun of this awards show, because I am. Look: They've got 27 Dresses in the Favorite Comedy Movie category. Come on! No Tropic Thunder? Hell, they didn't even give Sex and the City the obligatory nomination. And Reese Witherspoon is up for Favorite Female Movie

Chris Nolan sued by Batman

11 November 2008 3:23 PM, PST | From TotalFilm | See recent TotalFilm news

There are odd legal issues swirling around the business of filmmaking. And then there are silly ones. And then, there’s this: a town in southeastern Turkey called Batman is suing Warners and Chris Nolan. Warners always seems to be getting into hot legal water these days – between the Get Smart and Dukes Of Hazzard issues and the current Watchmen tussle – but this is something else. Batman’s mayor, Huseyin Kalkan is suing Nolan and the studio for royalties from The Dark Knight, accusing them of using the... .

"Get Smart," "27 Dresses" and "Mamma Mia!" are nominees for best movie comedy and "Sex and the City," "Mamma Mia!" and "Knight" will try their luck in the cast category.

Get Smart DVD Movie Review

9 November 2008 8:00 PM, PST | From MoviesOnline.ca | See recent MoviesOnline news

Get Smart is a movie I wanted desperately to love but unfortunately was just able to say it was 'good' but not 'excellent'. Its tough when you consider I had alot of great flicks to watch this week so Get Smart had some stiff competition to draw my attention. Although its well shot and has a great cast Get Smart does very little to deliver any magic and although it is quite fun.. its no Tropic Thunder. In Get Smart Maxwell Smart (Steve Carell) is on a mission to thwart the latest plot for world domination by the evil crime syndicate known as Kaos. When the headquarters of U.S. spy agency Cont...

Carell to walk around with a beaver puppet?

7 November 2008 6:57 AM, PST | From screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news

No, it’s no joke. Steve Carell is indeed attached to star in “The Beaver,” about a man who walks around with a beaver puppet, treating it just like a human creature.

According to THR, Kyle Killen wrote the script, which is apparently described as ”whimsical and winning” by those who have read it.

The trade also says plenty of studios are interested in acquiring “The Beaver,” although no sales will be made until a director joins the project.

Carell, who recently starred in “Get Smart,” can currently be seen on the new season of “The Office.” He’s also looking at a “Get Smart” sequel.

Steve Carell Befriends A Beaver Puppet

7 November 2008 1:51 AM, PST | From cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news

This may be a step down for Steve Carell. He's gone from working with Anne Hathaway in Get Smart, to starring opposite a beaver puppet. Maybe it's a sexy beaver puppet. Hr says Carell could play the lead in a movie called The Beaver. He'd play a man who walks around with a beaver puppet on his hand, a beaver puppet which he treats as if it's a human creature. The script is described as "whimsical and winning". I'm going to go ahead and also throw out weird. It's being compared to Being John Malcovich meets Lars and the Real Girl, which means it's probably artsy fartsy. It wouldn't hurt for Steve to try his hand at serious acting. He pulled off a lot of that rather brilliantly in The 40 Year-Old Virgin, though it's often overlooked in favor of focusing on the scene in which he smokes pot out

Carell Tapped For Get Smart Sequel

5 November 2008 8:13 AM, PST | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Comedic actor Steve Carell has reportedly been tapped for a forthcoming sequel to his spy-themed action film Get Smart.

The summer blockbuster's huge commercial success landed Carell a multi-million dollar three-movie deal with studio Warner Bros. last month.

The deal does not include any more secret agent sequels.

But, according to the New York Daily News, studio bosses are "moving forward" on the project - in which Carell will reportedly have producer credit.

One studio insider tells the publication: "He's not asking for ridiculous money. It's not green-lit yet, but it's in active development."

A Warner Bros spokesperson adds: "We're not having any difficulty with Steve. We have a great relationship. We just signed a first-look production deal with him. He's on the lot now. We're looking forward to a long relationship."

Get Smart has grossed more than $230 million (GBP144.1 million) worldwide to date.

Steve Carell on Board for Get Smart Sequel

5 November 2008 7:47 AM, PST | From Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news

America's favorite TV nitwit, Office star Steve Carell, is close to a deal to reprise his role as bumbling secret agent Maxwell Smart in a sequel to the summer comedy Get Smart, The New York Daily News is reporting. Though considered a mild disappointment by many in the movie industry, Get Smart still managed to earn upwards of $230 million worldwide -- more than enough to justify a follow-up.

Helping the Get Smart 2 deal movie forward is the fact that funnyman Carell has thus far avoided pulling a Terrence Howard. The Daily News quotes studio sources as saying things like, "We're not having any difficulty with Steve," and "He's not asking for ridiculous money." Huh. How shockingly reasonable.

No word yet on whether Get Smart costars Anne Hathaway or Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson will return for the sequel.

Spin-ematical: New on DVD for 11/04

4 November 2008 7:03 AM, PST | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

Clockwise from top left: Get Smart, Transsiberian, Kung Fu Panda, Budd Boetticher Box Set, Planet of the Apes 40th Anniversary Collection.

Welcome to this week's edition of Spin-ematical, chock full of alternatives to election coverage!

Kung Fu Panda

Though some of the celebrity voices were useless, Jack Black is great, and the film itself is pleasant, good-natured, and respectful of Asian culture. Available in at least seven editions, including widescreen, full-screen, Spanish, a Christmas gift set, with and without Secrets of the Furious Five (a 20-minute short), and on Blu-ray; oddly, this doesn't release until Sunday. Buy it.

Transsiberian

Traveling by train in the dead of winter from Beijing to Moscow should be much more restful than what happens to Woody Harrelson and Emily Mortimer in this adventure / suspense / thriller; Ben Kingsley plays a menacing Russian detective. I'm recommending this one sight unseen because Brad Anderson (Session 9, The Machinist) directed.

New to Home Video: 'Get Smart,' 'Planet of the Apes,' 'A Christmas Story'

4 November 2008 2:59 AM, PST | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

This week's list of DVD releases is kinda sorta missing a big name: Kung Fu Panda. You see, that movie will be released this weekend. Why? I guess to push some deals at retail outlets. Too little too late for Circuit City, I suppose, but I can't come up with a better reason.

I mean, it can't even be delivered to where you are before Monday at the earliest, so if you want to watch it with your kids over the weekend, this is the time to do it. But why not just release it today instead? I have no answer for you, unless it's an election day thing. It's a strange experiment and I'm not entirely sure how it will benefit DVD sales. Anyway, look for it in stores on Sunday, November 9th.

Beyond that, though, there are few titles worth mentioning:

Get Smart

An affable if not entirely invigorated TV adaptation,
