Hancock Unrated DVD Movie Review

29 November 2008 8:00 PM, PST | From MoviesOnline.ca | See recent MoviesOnline news

Finally got around to checking out Hancock which hit dvd shelves this week. The movie has a top notch cast which includes Will Smith a personal fav of mine and uber hot Charlize Theron who really knows how to look hot in just about anything. For added comedic value we also get Jason Bateman who is one of my favorite character actors, even if he only seems to play one type of character. Hancock delves into a really unique take on the superhero genre and gives us a man with super powers who is neither hero or villain. He just does not give a crap. He is a drunk, a womanizer ...

Spin-ematical: New on DVD for 11/25

25 November 2008 9:15 AM, PST | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

Hancock

As Thanksgiving approaches, we've got the wild superhero Hancock crashing into shelves. While it might have been led by mega-star Will Smith, it didn't get much love from critics and certainly bowed in the shadows of some old-school, established superheroes. That being said, it's still Will Smith and is said to have a powerful start that just falls flat. Teamed with a bunch of solid special features, it's worth a glimpse. Rent it.

Meet Dave

And then there's Eddie Murphy. In his latest wacky film, Murphy gets to play a human spacecraft for a bunch of tiny aliens. The DVD holds the obligatory extras -- gag reel, deleted scenes, alternate ending -- but I'd still say Skip it, even if the box office still gives the dude love.

Freaks and Geeks Yearbook Edition

No, this isn't a film. But considering the fact that this is Judd Apatow's baby,

New to Home Video: 'Hancock,' 'Space Chimps,' and 'Meet Dave'

25 November 2008 5:02 AM, PST | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

I'm slightly surprised that we don't have more DVD options this week. After all, isn't it Black Frickin' Friday this week? Nothing against what we do have...Ok, that's not true; this is a really lousy week of new releases, at least as far as the recent theatrical fare is concerned.

If there's good news out of all of that, I guess it's that the next month is predictably stockpiled with big, big movies. And there is one legit heavy hitter this week, so perhaps we should stop complaining. (But really, it's the everything but the new movies that have my interest.)

Hancock

Will Smith as a superhero. I mean, that's all you need for a summer movie, right? Trouble is, Hancock just isn't as good as it could be. I loved the surly superhero approach, but if there was a blockbuster this year that really lost it in the third act.

New DVD Releases: Hancock, Meet Dave, and More

25 November 2008 4:41 AM, PST | From Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news

The summer blockbuster Hancock, starring Will Smith as a slacker superhero with a public-relations problem, leads this week's crop of new DVD releases. Also debuting today on DVD: Eddie Murphy's ill-fated sci-fi comedy Meet Dave; Vince Vaughn's ill-fated Christmas comedy Fred Claus; and the computer-animated, simian, and yes, also ill-fated, sci-fi comedy Space Chimps.

And just in case you forgot to set your DVR last weekend, 24: Redemption arrives on DVD today -- just two days after it premiered on Fox. Pick it up and watch Jack Bauer singlehandedly save sub-Saharan Africa. Let's see Bono do that!

On DVD and Games This Week: "24 Redemption," "Hancock," "Lord of the Rings: Conquest," "Age of Empires Mythologies" and more!

25 November 2008 1:38 AM, PST | From Movie Jungle | See recent Movie Jungle news

This week includes some zesty releases both in the DVD and games areas. We'll focus on a few and list what else may be of interest. Will Smith flies into action in "Hancock," a somewhat different superhero flick which includes Jason Bateman, Charlize Theron, Eddie Marsan and Martin Klebba. There are a few variations of the product. Eddie Murphy starrer "Meet Dave" sees release on standard widescreen and Blu-ray versions. We can highly recommend this comedy for the whole family. It provides the laughs and the constant adventure keeps one interested for the duration of the film.

On DVD Today: November 25, 2008

DVD Links: Release Dates | New Dvds | Reviews | RSS Feed Hancock I posted my review of the Blu-ray edition of Hancock right here and it isn't exactly a favorable one. This movie, while having a great concept, just doesn't work and it all has to do with the script as it was presented on screen. I didn't read Vincent Ngo's original script though, and considering what David had to say about it when he asked whether it was too soon to remake Hancock it sounds like there is a potentially great story left on the table in an effort to release a toned down film. I know they are working on a sequel to the film and I have no idea what direction they plan on going, but a satisfying sequel could make this original more tolerable. However, right now, this film isn't worth your time. Criterion Releases

Blu-ray Review: Hancock (2-Disc Special Edition)

24 November 2008 11:03 PM, PST | From Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

Note: There are a couple of minor spoilers in this review, but the box art itself gives away the major one so I don't really feel too bad about it. The concept behind Hancock is great as it brings the consequences of being superhuman front and center, with an emphasis on "human." Unfortunately the execution ends up being a problem as it brings to light more problems than solutions. Hancock, as portrayed by Will Smith, is a man that has let his loneliness get the better of him. He is a superhero without an alter-ego. Instead he has a forgotten past and a tendency to not care about the damage he causes despite his urge to stop evil and protect people. Quite simply, he's a superhero with a complex and that is intriguing, especially when it is done in such a raw fashion. To bad the filmmakers didn't seem to

Hey, Remember How 'Hancock' Was All Chopped Up?

20 November 2008 2:03 PM, PST | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

...and yet still managed to be a damn good movie? Well I sure thought it was, anyway, even if the Tomato-meter doesn't seem to agree with me. I said lots of nice things about the flick back in my original review, but I also longed to see Peter Berg's original cut. The one that wasn't sacrificed at the altar of the demigod known as PeeGee-Thirteen.

So hey! Hancock comes out on DVD next week, and guess what? Two different versions! (Three if you count the Blu-Ray, which offers both versions in the same package.) Ok, so according to this DVD cover, the theatrical cut runs 92 minutes, while this DVD cover clearly illustrates that the Unrated Cut goes about 102 minutes. And you don't need t snip a full ten minutes just to excise a few F-bombs. Needless to say, I'm very enthused about checking out the "unrated" cut -- but

Will Smith Talks Growth As An Actor At The Miami Premiere Of His Latest Movie, "Seven Pounds"

18 November 2008 12:32 AM, PST | From icelebz.com | See recent iCelebz news

Miami, Fl (Cns) -- Hollywood star Will Smith thrilled fans by posing with them for pictures and signing autographs at the Miami premiere of his latest movie, "Seven Pounds."

The new drama, opening in theaters on December 19th, re-teams Smith with "The Pursuit of Happyness" director Gabriele Muccino and his "Men in Black II" co-star Rosario Dawson.

After an Oscar-nominated performance in "The Pursuit of Happyness" and more emotionally-charged roles than his usual blockbuster fare in "Hancock" and "I Am Legend", the forty-year-old actor/producer is now starring in his most dramatic turn yet.

"I'm just trying to grow as an actor," Smith tells Cns. "I think that the next ten years of my career are going to be the real sweet spot. I think I found real focus, I think I have more command of my tool. I have something to say. I think that's very important for art,

DVD Review: Hancock (2008)

16 November 2008 9:34 PM, PST | From The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news

Ever since Independence Day became a smash back in 1996, the 4th of July has turned into Will Smith Blockbuster Weekend. Men in Black followed in 1997, and Smith has racked up plenty more mid-summer hits over the following decade.

Smith scored again with 2008.s Hancock, a superhero flick with a twist. Smith plays the title character, a man with tremendous powers who uses them begrudgingly. Bitter and depressed for reasons that become apparent as the story progresses, Hancock hits the bottle hard, and his attempts to do good often backfire. This means he often earns the animosity of the mortals, a trend that Hancock exacerbates with his caustic personality.

After Hancock saves his life, publicist Ray Embrey (Jason Bateman) decides to repay the hero with a PR makeover. Ray pushes to rehabilitate Hancock with the public and turn him into the hero he should be. The film follows that path along

Help the People Choose Correctly!

13 November 2008 12:11 PM, PST | From DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news

As everyone knows, I'm DC's resident awards show junkie, and while even I usually give the People's Choice Awards a pass, I couldn't help but notice their contenders in the Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Show category, all of which have been the topic of much discussion around these parts.

The three nominated shows are "Heroes", "Supernatural", and "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles". The fact that "Heroes" made the cut is pretty disheartening considering how far it has declined since its debut, but the other two are more than worthy. For me it was a tough call, but in the end I had to cast my vote for the Winchester brothers.

Other categories that have some relevance to Dread Central readers are:

Favorite Action Movie

The Dark Knight

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Iron Man

'The Dark Knight' Leads Nominees For Utterly Worthless People's Choice Awards

12 November 2008 1:55 PM, PST | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

They still haven't shut down The People's Choice Awards, and they'll air next January, hosted again by Queen Latifah. These awards, of course, are very rarely indicative of anything else. Sometimes you'll see some carryover from the Golden Globes to the Oscars, and there are a couple of film critics' groups that are usually good predictors of the Academy Awards, too, but The people's Choice Awards can really only give you pointers in your Blockbuster Movie Awards office pool.

It's the 35th annual celebration, which means prior to 1974, people had no choice. That really is a shame, isn't it?

This might all see like I'm making fun of this awards show, because I am. Look: They've got 27 Dresses in the Favorite Comedy Movie category. Come on! No Tropic Thunder? Hell, they didn't even give Sex and the City the obligatory nomination. And Reese Witherspoon is up for Favorite Female Movie

On the matter, The Hollywood Reporter claimed that 58-year-old Joe Johnston, who is known for his works in "Hidalgo" and "October Sky", has been brought aboard to direct "Captain America".

About Johnston, Marvel's Kevin Feige gushed, "This is a guy who designed the vehicles for 'Star Wars,' who storyboarded the convoy action sequence for 'Raiders of the Lost Ark'." Charlize Theron is in talks to join Tom Cruise in Bharat Nalluri’s upcoming “The Tourist,” a remake of France’s “Anthony Zimmer.”

Variety says the film centers on an American tourist who faces great danger when a female Interpol (Theron) agent tricks him into taking out a criminal she once had an affair with.

Nalluri, whose credits include “Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day,” is directing a script by Julian Fellowes. Christopher McQuarrie (“Valkyrie”) is currently doing a rewrite.

Theron was last seen opposite Will Smith in “Hancock.” She will next star in Guillermo Arriaga’s “The Burning Plain,” followed by John Hillcoat’s “The Road.”

The original “Anthony Zimmer” was directed by Jerome Salle and starred Yvan Attal and Sophie Marceau.
