Buzz around town says that Kevin Greutert is the cat to go to if you need a horror film edited. He's been on the Saw franchise since the beginning and he spliced and diced The Strangers . Next up, he's in the director's chair for Saw VI and in an interview with Fearnet he talks about the early stages of development. "I've got hundreds and hundreds of pages of every conceivable variation of what we can do with Saw VI and beyond," he says. "One of those will hopefully be the thing that we get. But it's a matter of thinking through every possible thing we can imagine. And of course creating new characters that we think people will like and can contribute to the drama . that's important as well." Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton are back to pen...

Somewhere between the savage brutality of Saw and the psychological headaches of Michael Haneke’s original Funny Games falls last May’s The Strangers, a Liv Tyler-screamfest with a enough genuine scares to make it worth a late-night viewing. Tyler and Scott Speedman play Liz and James, a couple whose relationship is on the decline after an awkward marriage proposal. After retreating to James’ childhood cabin, the quarreling lovers’ make-up sex is interrupted by a lost traveler. It doesn’t take too long before Liz and James are fleeing for their lives from mask-wearing torturers that will give your Mom’s homemade Halloween costumes a run for their money.

People are pretty divided on whether they like this film or not. I thought it was really well shot even if its style made the true to life elements of its ending seem out of place. But in a sea of really awful remakes and direct to dvd garbage I was just glad for a little honest suspense. Is this itself a remake of Funny Games Us? Not really, at least not anymore than any home invasion scenario film is. But I do think, after watching and rewatching it, that The Strangers does more than try to tack on a socially relevant ending to make up for the guilt of being little more than a better than average (by current standard anyway) horror effort. First the performances are there to support the idea that these are people not just character types being terrorized. Good performances from Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman

It is supposed to be the moms who boast about their kids, but with Liv Tyler and her 3-year old son Milo, the compliments flow in the opposite direction. "He likes to call me his princess," says Tyler, whose The Incredible Hulk and The Strangers both came out on DVD Tuesday. "He says, 'Oh, mommy, you're so cute. You're my precious, precious mommy.' " The single mom, who split last spring from her rocker husband Royston Langdon, appreciates the positive affirmation – even if it comes at a price. "He's at that age now where he's so sweet and so loving

Horror film doesn't hold up
Ever since the Coen brothers pulled one over on viewers with the blatant but joking falsehood, “This is a true story,” thrillers “inspired by true events”—as The Strangers claims to be—have held less water. As Fargo coyly pointed out, it’s a base qualifier, and when a filmmaker flashes that credential, viewers should be alert. I suppose The Strangers could’ve been inspired by true events, inasmuch as violent crimes do occur, and sometimes they’re random. But with the film’s posters and opening credits presenting the claim, it’s clear that first-time filmmaker Bryan Bertino really wants viewers to believe it. Alone, this cheap trick wouldn’t be a huge offense, but in the context of The Strangers, it feels

I gave The Strangers a rather harsh review when I saw it in the theaters (read here). As I was watching the Blu-ray I began wondering if I had been way off base . The first half of this film is creepy, atmospheric and damn good. However, at the 43 minute mark all the problems I had with the film came back to me as it quickly turned from an inventive and creepy thriller into a film that was its own worst enemy. As I said in my theatrical review, the victims in this film can't help but be terrorized as they continue to run into harm's way or become the source of their own distress. The film features three nameless and faceless villains as they terrorize an unsuspecting couple just home from a wedding ceremony where the guy (Scott Speedman) asked the woman (Liv Tyler) to marry him, to which she said,

Incredible Hulk
"There once was an angry young man..." sounds like a fairy tale, but the rebooted Hulk got a huge leg up with the casting of the intense Edward Norton as the scientist who turns green with rage. This Hulk has narrative problems, but as a straight-ahead action picture it keeps a pretty good beat as it rocks along, and definitely benefits from Norton and Tim Roth as his nemesis; Liv Tyler and William Hurt also star. Scott examined all the features of the 3-disk Special Edition on DVD; also available in a single-disk DVD edition and on Blu-ray. Buy it.

This summer's blockbuster reboot The Incredible Hulk, featuring Edward Norton in the title role of the gamma-ray enhanced superhero, leads this week's crop of new DVD releases. Pick up the 3-Disc Special Edition and enjoy a plethora of special features, including the much-discussed alternate opening in which a tiny glimpse of Captain America is said to be revealed.
Also debuting on DVD today: Bryan Bertino's super-scary home-invasion flick The Strangers, available in both standard and unrated editions; Ben Stein's Darwinian documentary Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed; and new Blu-ray editions of Sweeney Todd and Casino Royale.
Our DVD pick of the week is the two-volume James Bond Blu-ray Collection, featuring six classic 007 flicks, Dr. No, Thunderball, Live and Let Die, For Your Eyes Only, From Russia with Love, and Die Another Day, available for the first time in high definition. It's the perfect way to bone up on Bond

Among 2008.s nominees for .Trailer That Least Accurately Represents Its Film., we get The Strangers. Based on its ads, I thought it.d be a creepy supernatural horror film along the lines of The Ring. That wasn.t correct, as the movie instead went for real-life psychological tension more like Straw Dogs.
After they attend a wedding, Kristen McKay (Liv Tyler) and her boyfriend James Hoyt (Scott Speedman) stay at a remote home owned by his family. The romantic getaway James planned doesn.t go well, however. He proposes to Kristen but she declines his request and the evening takes a depressing turn.
The situation doesn.t improve as the night progresses. A strange girl knocks on the door and asks for someone named Tamara, and she later returns after James leaves to get cigarettes. Other foreboding incidents accompany her subsequent visit, and other folks join in as well. They

On Fangoria Radio recently, Saw V director David Hackl revealed that the latest sequel—which he promised will be the bloodiest of the bunch—has secured its R rating from the Motion Picture Association of America. Of the Saw V ruling, the MPAA edict states: “Rated R for sequences of grisly bloody violence and torture, language and brief nudity.”
“We took Saw V to the MPAA three times,” Hackl told us, “and we eventually got our R. But they were really cool about it. They are getting into the Saw films. We were surprised how far they let us go with it.”
The series’ former production designer will vacate the director’s chair for next October’s inevitable Saw VI, to be helmed instead by the franchise’s longtime editor Kevin Greutert (who also cut The Strangers, The Thirst, Room 6 and Repo! The Genetic Opera) from a script by
