There's a surprisingly gargantuan Internet faction dedicated to predicting who will be up for film's most coveted prize, the Academy Award. Publications like Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, Entertainment Weekly, Los Angeles Times and New York Times all have Oscar blogs that obsessively trail the fluctuations in buzz amongst the year's top films. That's not to mention stand-alone sites like Awards Daily and In Contention, or well-known bloggers like Jeff Wells, Dave Poland and Anne Thompson. Even Roger Ebert has devoted a wealth of recent ink on the subject. But, the truth is, no matter how much someone knows, it's still just a wild guessing game. Here's a look at the films and performances that seem to be ahead in the eight major categories, at this vantage point. Take note: this is merely speculation about who will be nominated, not who will win. It's also just that: speculation.

Over the weekend Slumdog Millionaire won big at the British Independent Film Awards as Danny Boyle took home director kudos, Dev Patel won for most promising newcomer and the film itself won best independent film. Of course, many are reporting the news as if this is just the start of something big as buzz around the little film has gotten louder and louder over the course of the previous week. I reviewed it and gave it a well-earned "A-", but when it comes down to awards I can't see this flick moving all the way to the big show. Take, for example, the last five Bifa "Best British Independent Film" award winners were Control, This Is England, The Constant Gardener, Vera Drake and Dirty Pretty Things. Of that bunch there are eight Oscar nominations including a win for Rachel Weisz for The Constant Gardener, but there isn't a best picture

The International Press Academy announced their nominees for the 13th Annual Satellite Awards and it is a mixed bag of snubs across the board and further proof the idea of separating Drama, Comedy and Musicals is just about the dumbest idea around as they are Really reaching by including Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist as a comedy or a musical. I would even say Happy-Go-Lucky and Vicky Cristina Barcelona don't fit the category. What was so funny about Poppy being attacked by her driving instructor? Where was the comedy in VCB? Gimme a break. it's going to be even worse when the Globes nominate something like High School Musical 3 and Mamma Mia! instantly giving them some kind of credibility. However, category distinction aside the absence of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button from all categories makes me wonder if any of these people even saw all the films. Take for

The nominees have been announced for the 13th annual Satellite Awards, presented by the International Press Association. It works very much the way the Golden Globes does (or is that do?), although there are awards in technical categories as well. The awards will be handed out on Sunday, December 14th in beautiful Century City, California.
The big news is probably that Meryl Streep has received nominations both Best Actress categories, for Doubt and Mamma Mia!, though I think most people would probably have assumed that much, given the weak year of performances (no offense to Kat Dennings, but does she really deserve a nomination for something based on Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist; does the film deserve three?). Mark Ruffalo also got the double dip, which wasn't expected, for The Brothers Bloom and What Doesn't Kill You.
Elsewhere, The Dark Knight got passed over for Best Picture, nabbing nominations for both Christopher Nolan and Heath Ledger.

The winners of the 11th British Independent Film Awards have been announced on Sunday, November 30, and one that is shinning brighter than the others is "Slumdog Millionaire". In the announcement made at Old Billingsgate Market in London, the Danny Boyle-directed movie about a poor Indian boy who gets a shot at winning millions in a television game show brought home three kudos.
Nominated for six categories, "Slumdog" has nailed three of the coveted awards given away, including the Best British Independent Film title. The romantic comedy drama has also brought recognition to its director Danny Boyle, who received the Best Director prize, and its star Dev Patel, who is hailed to be the Most Promising Newcomer.
In the meantime, "Hunger" and "In Bruges" which dominated the nomination with seven nods each failed to win big. "Hunger" got three awards, The Douglas Hickox Award or the Best Debut Director kudo for director Steve McQueen,

Stephen Daldry's new film, The Reader, is one of those you can't discount this time of year. By the way, we're squarely in "this time of year" year now, where box office numbers take a back seat to quality. Funny that the season only lasts about two months, isn't it?
But The Reader is immaculately groomed for "this time of year," with its complex subject and a cast anchored by Kate Winslet. We know the story already: Five Oscar nominations and no wins. As long as she keeps acting, the 33-year-old Winslet will continue accumulating nominations at the rate of about one every other year. And she'll probably win one of these years, maybe even this year. The Los Angeles Times' Gold Derby says that Winslet and Meryl Streep are about the two easiest decisions in the category.
But it's not all Winslet; the film also stars Ralph Fiennes,

Despite recent controversies, preparations for the Sundance Film Festival are in full swing, prompting the announcement of the annual event's Jan. 15 opening night film: the Aussie animated import Mary and Max, featuring the voices of Philip Seymour Hoffman, Toni Collette and Eric Bana. The selection is a major coup for the film, considering the attention lavished on recent opening night films, like this year's rather slept-on tragicomedy In Bruges.

Following the recent AFI screening of Doubt, which was actually an unfinished print, media that was in attendance was asked not to discuss the flick, but a few nuggets are leaking out here and there and the film remains a high profile feature. Most recently Dave Karger at "Entertainment Weekly" called it one of "three sure shots" at the Oscars this year alongside The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Frost/Nixon. He most recently took the naysayers to task with a recent post saying the following: An intimate character piece, Doubt doesn't boast the expansive production values of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Australia, or even Revolutionary Road. And with crowd-pleasers like The Dark Knight and Slumdog Millionaire in the picture, a tougher film like Doubt could get squeezed out. But here's why I think it may make the final five. It's looking fairly likely that four of the film's actors-Streep,

Last Friday, we presented all the nominees for the Gotham Independent Film Awards, and today, we're going across the pond for the British Independent Film Awards. In Bruges, which has been my top film of the year since February, is one of two films to earn seven nominations; Hunger joins it at the top of the heap.
Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson are both nominees in the Best Actor category, Ralph Fiennes is deservedly nominated for both In Bruges and The Duchess as a supporting actor, and Martin McDonagh is doubly nominated, for Best Debut Director and for his fantastic In Bruges script.
Seriously, rent that damn movie. I have no idea why Focus Features wanted to release the movie so badly and then held it to a total of 232 theaters in the United States. Overseas, the film made over $20 million but here in the U.S., it could only bring in $7.8 million.

Colin Farrell is what a good actor should be. His recent work in such films as CASSANDRA.S Dream, In Bruges and now Pride And Glory really stand out as an actor growing in his craft. While he had appeared in some high profile films, it is nice to see him take on movies that are a little more personal than say, Miami Vice. Lately, we seem to hear a whole lot of negative about people in the news. Whether it is the campaigns or an actor or radio personality making harsh claims, it all...

Movie of the Weak?! Pride and Glory Plot: One family has a long history of New York City Police officers. The family’s moral codes are tested when Ray (Edward Norton), investigates a case that reveals an incendiary police corruption scandal involving his own brother-in-law (Colin Farrell). Buzz: Norton is on the short list for top American actor and Farrell can do it (In Bruges) so we’ll see what director Gavin O’Connor (Tumbleweeds, Miracle) can do with this gritty cop drama. On the surface, Pride and Glory has all the markings of a run-of-the-mill corrupt cop/thriller that has nothing new or interesting to say, with an inevitably illogical twist at the end. Perhaps the only real draw for the film is its two leads: the rock-solid Edward Norton trying to forget his role as The Hulk, and the likable Colin Farrell fresh of the surprisingly hilarious and criminally under seen In Bruges. But Pride and Glory succeeds because it grounds itself in fully developed characters who, amidst the violence, greed, dishonor, pride, and glory that comes with bleeding NYPD blue, never waiver in either their morals or motives. Gavin O'Connor's film is uncompromising in its view that there are only good cops and bad cops, with no grey area in between and no easy way out for either side. The Tierney family literally lives and breathes for the New
