'The Wolfman' May be Delayed Until Fall

27 November 2008 7:11 PM, PST | From Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news

Fangoria is reporting that the Joe Johnston-directed remake of Universal’s classic The Wolfman may miss its April 3 release date. Benicio Del Toro stars as Lawrence Talbot who is bitten by a werewolf and endures the agonizing transformation every time the moon is full and the wolf’s bane bright and now may wait until fall.

The movie was written by Andrew Kevin Walker and David Self with make-up effects from Oscar-winning monster maker Rick Baker.

This was Universal’s first step in freshening that brand following their success with The Mummy films starting Brendan Fraser.  The studio intends to patiently wait for Guillermo del Toro to finish The Hobbit before he takes on a remake of Frankenstein, the one that started it all back in 1931.

Wolfman Delayed?

21 November 2008 6:29 AM, PST | From iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news

Fangoria is reporting that Universal's upcoming remake of The Wolfman may be moving out of it's proposed April 3rd, 2009 release slot to a Fall 2009 release date instead. No confirmation on any of this yet, but maybe Universal is thinking a Halloween release is more fitting? (Or maybe the film just needs a bit more work.) Whatever the case, we're all going to have to wait just a tad bit longer before seeing Benicio Del Toro transform into a lycanthrope.

The new update of the classic Universal monster is being helmed by director Joe Johnston from a script by Andrew Kevin Walker (SE7EN) & David Self and stars Benicio Del Toro (Sin City), Anthony Hopkins (The Silence Of The Lambs), Emily Blunt (Wind Chill) & Hugo Weaving (V For Vendetta). Rick Baker provides the make-up FX for the new Wolf Man! Check out Mezco's Wolfman action figure right Here!

Wolfman to howl later?

20 November 2008 11:30 AM, PST | From Fangoria.com | See recent Fangoria news

Fango just heard through the grapevine that we may have to wait a little longer to see Benicio Del Toro get hairy. Word is that Universal is delaying The Wolfman from its previously announced April 3 debut to sometime next fall.

Directed by Joe (Jurassic Park III) Johnston from a script by Andrew Kevin Walker and David Self, the remake of Universal’s 1941 classic The Wolf Man stars Del Toro (pictured) as Lawrence Talbot, who in this scenario is an actor who returns to his ancestral home and falls victim to the lycanthropic curse. Oscar-winning monster maker Rick Baker created Talbot’s beastly side and the carnage (which we’re told will be R-rated) he creates. We’ll try to sniff out specific new release-date news to bring to you; our magazine coverage of The Wolfman begins in Fango #279, on sale in December.

Are Werewolves the New Vampires?

20 November 2008 10:56 AM, PST | From Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news

Although vampires have been the creatures on everyone's lips lately due to the Twilight phenomenon, New York Magazine is taking stock of an overpowering wave of werewolves on Hollywood's horizon. The pack of cinematic lycanthropes will be led by the January 23 release of Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (check out the movie's new poster) to be followed on April 3 by the remake of the Wolf Man starring Benicio Del Toro and Anthony Hopkins. And there are a litter of lower budget films and not yet finalized projects -- including a rumored werewolf project with Ridley Scott at the the helm --nipping at their heels. The clincher though for Nym, is the prominence of werewolves in the next two Twilight novels, which Summit Entertainment is making moves toward turning into movies as well, starting with New Moon.

For those not familiar, Johnston’s resume includes family adventure films such as Honey, I Shrunk The Kids and Jumanji, inspirational films such as October Sky, a couple of popcorn-clunkers such as Hidalgo and Jurassic Park III, and the upcoming creature-feature reboot, The Wolf Man.

Yes, this is the man Marvel is hanging their hopes on to turn The First Avenger: Captain America into a box office smash. But with a resume as varied as Johnston’s, what kind of Cap movie are we to expect?

Before we tear into him, it should be noted that

The Internets have been given a shot of super soldier serum this Am, as word has leaked that Joe Johnston, a director with an incredibly forgettable name but a solid resume, will sit in the Captain’s seat of the upcoming Marvel film. Captain America (a/k/a The First Avenger: Captain America) is skedded to be released in 2011 and rumors have been flying around for quite some time.  Is it set during the second World War?  Will Will Smith don the red white and blue suit as was floated a few weeks back?  (We have our own pics for the role of course.) Will the Iron Man scribes Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby be writing the script as they’ve hinted in recent interviews?. Finally: some hard news. Joe Johnston is the man.  And, yes, he is also The Man.  Dude’s made nothing but fun movies.  Jumanji was him.

Joe Johnston to Direct 'Captain America'

10 November 2008 5:24 AM, PST | From Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news

There is no casting as yet nor is there a screenwriter.

Johnston made his name as a special effects designer for George Lucas on the original Star Wars films prior to shifting to directing and his credits include genre fare such as the underrated The Rocketeer and next year’s Wolfman film with Benicio del Toro. Johnston met with Marvel Studio execs two years ago and hit it off so this is the culmination of that relationship.

'Captain America' Has a Director!

10 November 2008 5:20 AM, PST | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

At last, First Avenger: Captain America moves forward! According to The Hollywood Reporter, Joe Johnston has landed the job of directing one of the most beloved superheroes in Marvel's canon. Get this -- he's been in talks for this for two years straight, and most of the plans currently swirling around Cap originated then, thanks to Johnston. So he's certainly put his time in on the character. At the present time, no writer has been hired, but the pitches are pouring in, so expect another announcement soon. The movie is still scheduled to be released May 6th, 2011.

Johnston probably isn't the most glamorous or obvious choice -- but, arguably, he's handled patriotic themes of Americana well in October Sky and the overlooked Hidalgo. But perhaps the biggest credit to his name when it comes to Captain America is The Rocketeer, which is nearly what a Captain America film should be.
