At some point this past summer, between all but consecutive viewings of The Dark Knight, I slipped into a screening of Step Brothers with the same tempered expectations with which I had greeted Blades of Glory and Semi-Pro -- and found myself equally surprised in the coming days and weeks and months by just how admittedly tickled I was by any of them (quoting lines was moderate on all counts). Mind you, I'm saying this as the guy who chuckled during Anchorman, sure, but not really enough to keep it on my shelf or call myself thankful for it.
That's nothing against our Eric D. Snider, and nothing against the star of each film mentioned, Will Ferrell (yes, he was actually Batman). In fact, with Step Brothers hitting shelves today (with reports of a wholly sung commentary track), it only seemed fitting that we go over his most amusing roles as overgrown man-children (Ferrell's,

Samuel Fuller's follow-up to The Big Red One was shelved by Paramount Pictures before its scheduled release in 1982 because of fears that its premise -- a white dog has been trained to attack black people -- would stir up more controversy than box office. Fuller was understandably outraged; in his autobiography, A Third Face, he wrote: "The studio has used me as a scapegoat for their lack of determination and courage." The film, co-written by Curtis Hanson (La Confidential), with a score by the legendary Ennio Morricone, later received acclaim when it was released in Europe but never received a home video release in the Us and has rarely been seen here. Kristy McNichol plays an actress who adopts the dog; Paul Winfield is as an anthropologist who tries to reverse the training. The Criterion Collection DVD includes a featurette with Hanson, producer Jon Davison, and Fuller's widow,

It's a pretty big Tuesday for DVDs. Of course, last week was, in the words of Miracle Max, mostly dead, and next Tuesday is The Dark Knight. So it's only natural that we'd have a packed Tuesday in between.
This week is also unusual in that it bucks the recent trend of movies that have been out for only three months before they wind up on home video. One of these flicks is six months old, and another one is about five months old. That doesn't mean we're seeing a reversal in that disturbing have-it-now trend, just that the studios wanted bigger fourth quarter pushes for movies from their second quarter.
I happen to agree with whatever blurbmeister is adorning the ads for this DVD when he said it's the biggest adrenaline rush of the summer. The Dark Knight has great action, but it's a long, moody sumbitch,

This summer's surprise blockbuster Wanted, starring Angelina Jolie and James McAvoy, headlines this week's robust crop of new DVD releases. For those that read my recent Blu-ray review you know I am not too keen on this flick the second time around and Sara really seems to loathe it in her DVD review. So, should you buy it? If you like long films that render themselves boring by the time you see it a second time then by all means step up to the plate. Wanted This is a title I can understand more people picking up, but as I said in my Blu-ray review, I still recommend you rent before you buy. This is a fun film for

My wife hates Will Ferrell, yet loves Step Brothers and quotes it daily ("We're here to f**k sh*t up" being her favorite). And unlike me who plugs movie quotes into conversations as if they're Lego blocks, she--like most socially adept humans--rarely quotes films. Yet, you don't know my wife so that probably means nothing to you, but I find the fact she digs a Ferrell film and puppets it to be astonishing. Her behavior drills to the core of Step Brothers' success. Like the previous collaborations between director Adam McKay and Ferrell (Anchorman, Talladega Nights), Step Brothers crackles with anarchic, hilarious lines that sound as if they were thought up during a mescaline-soaked fever-dream. I'm attracted to bizarre, zany dialogue, the sort that lends itself to constant quoting among friends. And I don't deny the immature kid in me giggles even harder when it's especially vulgar (and

In an interesting interview with the Sun Times Frank Spotznik revealed that the recent X-Files movie 'I Want to Believe' failed because of its placement in the box office and not the films merits. He told them quote; "Our theatrical performance this past summer notwithstanding, I think The X-Files is still a natural for theatrical release. We just opened the wrong week. The week after The Dark Knight, I think, was just not the right week for us. "I think it was especially brutal to us because we weren't counter-programming. We weren't Mamma Mia! or Step Brothers. We were a little dark s...

Welcome to another week of DVDs and games. A great spread awaits - from adventures, actioners, arguing brothers and more. The "The Chronicles of Narnia" series continues with "Prince Caspian" released in various forms. For Blu-ray buyers, the only one to hunt for would be the 3-Disc version over the 2-Disc. This is stacked full of features and includes a Digital Copy which can be added to your computer for viewing whilst on a trip with the kids if need be. Standard viewers should also aim for the 3-Disc Collector's Edition. If you're up for a silly comedy with familiar faces, "Step Brothers" stars Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly. This one's brought to you by the same folks who turned out "Talladega Nights"...

Having shared his future plans of another "The X-Files" movie, Frank Spotnitz now revealed that the development of the third "X-Files" film may depend on the DVD sales of "The X-Files: I Want to Believe". To Bloody-Disgusting, the popular sci-fi thriller series said about his belief of future film installment saying, "I think there very well could be more in the future. ...When the studio looks at the sales of the DVD that's when they will really decide to see if its worth risking."
On the disappointing result "I Want to Believe" attained at the box office, Spotnitz pointed out on the bad timing of the release. "We were all a bit disappointed, we had some indication that we were in for a rough time when The Dark Knight started to become the phenomenon that it is, and breaking records. The Dark Knight is a history making film at the box office,

Last week, we took stock of the best women’s fashions that hit cinema screens in 2008 and agreed that it had been a good year for the ladies. But how did it fare for the fellas? Not too shabby, thanks for asking. This past year has seen a whole glut of classy chaps parade their goods on the big screen. From young ‘uns like Zac Efron in High School Musical 3: Senior Year working the check shirts and skinny ties of today’s trends to the more established gentlemanly look of James Bond’s formal suits in Quantum of Solace. The fashions have reflected all weathers – the wintry knitwear in Zack and Miri Make a Porno to the sunny beachwear of Forgetting Sarah Marshall and both sides of the law – from superheroes Tony Stark (Iron Man) and Bruce Wayne (The Dark Knight) to the underworld criminals in RocknRolla. And we

If another "The X-Files" movie was to be made, it will most likely see the return of the aliens to the sci-fi film. Talking to MovieWeb in the promotional effort for "The X-Files: I Want to Believe" DVD version, writer/producer Frank Spotnitz states, "Yeah. I mean, if we were to make one more feature, I think we would definitely have to deal with alien colonization."
He also hints that the third movie may be the last of the series. "I would think so," he notes when asked whether "The X-Files 3" would be the final closure film. "It certainly would be designed to be the period on the sentence." Meanwhile, on the possible date the movie will come out, Spotnitz suggests late 2012 to be one of the potential release dates.
"There's a date that looms very important in X-Files mythology, which is December 2012. I think after the DVD comes out,

With only a month and a half left of 2008, we at Boxwish are starting to get all nostalgic looking back over what has been a great year for films. In the action genre there was the return of old favourites Indiana Jones, James Bond and Batman with some exciting new kids on the block like Iron Man also making their mark. Boyish comedies consistently delivered laughs such as Tropic Thunder, Pineapple Express and Step Brothers, while ladies got a strong shout-out with the likes of Sex and the City and Mamma Mia! Adorable robot Wall•E stole hearts, musicals as diverse as High School Musical 3 and Sweeney Todd had us tapping our feet and directors such as Guy Ritchie (RocknRolla) and the Coen brothers (No Country for Old Men, Burn After Reading) made dramatic comebacks. And so as the year that was begins to wind up, we look back at

Last week was a big week for movie-related Broadway stories with Spider-Man and The Goonies, and this week continues the trend with news that Will Ferrell will make his Broadway debut in January in the new solo comedy “You’re Welcome America. A Final Night With George W Bush.” Variety reports that the stage production will be helmed by Adam McKay, the writer-director of Ferrell pics “Step Brothers,” “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby” and “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.” No details on the plot just yet, but the production begins previews Inauguration Day, Jan. 20, ahead of a Feb. 1 opening at the Cort Theater. The limited engagement is set to go dark on March 15th. The writing credits have not yet been confirmed, although it seems likely Ferrell and McKay will collaborate on the script, since the duo co-wrote the screenplays for all three of their prior film outings.

The setting was ironic. While attending a charity golf tournament, Will Ferrell told USA Today that he was no longer going to make sports comedies.
The star of Talladega Nights, Blades of Glory, Kicking and Screaming, and Semi-Pro says, "You know, I think I filled my quota."
"I will no longer attempt to do any sports movie, anymore. Any sports," clarified the legendary Ron Burgundy. "I'm retired from sports-genre films."
With Step Brothers marking the third straight year and fourth time since 2003 that he's had a movie earn over $100 million, Ferrell is free to focus on other pursuits. He is currently only committed to next year's Land of the Lost adaptation, although there has been rampant speculation that we'll see a follow-up to Anchorman sooner than later.
In the meantime, he's golfing, wearing on Friday what was described as "loud black and white shorts, garish gold shoes, green socks and

It looks like Will Ferrell has finally gotten the message. The whole sports comedy thing is so over. Talking to USA Today at a charity golf tournament, Ferrell pledged, "I will no longer attempt to do any sports movie, anymore. Any sports." "Yeah, I'm retired from sports-genre films. You know, I think I filled my quota," Ferrell said. Will hasn't really done as many sports-genre comedies as you might think though. He's currently up to a total of four. It's just that he did all four in less than three years. Of those four only two, Talladega Nights and Blades of Glory, ever made much of a mark. Kicking & Screaming and Semi-Pro came and went from theaters with barely a whisper. After the flop of Semi-Pro earlier this year, it makes sense that Ferrell would be ready to call it quits. Did you see Step Brothers? Hilarious, and sports ...
